Hair care with Castor oil
Hair Care with Castor Oil
The Ricinus communis – the castor tree – is also called the "miracle tree." This is not without reason, as castor oil has many special properties. Castor oil is not only a popular oil today, but has been used for centuries. In ancient Egypt, its seeds were found in tombs; at that time, the oil was the basis for aromatic ointment. The Greek writer Herodotus (485-425 BC) called castor oil "an oil that makes hair grow." In India and Ayurveda, castor oil has also been known for a long time and is used both externally and internally. Castor oil is a viscous oil (about 10 times thicker than olive oil) and is therefore the oil of choice for nourishing hair and protecting the skin from moisture loss.
In this blog post about hair care with castor oil: tips and two recipes for a hair mask and a scalp massage!
Hair Care
In hair care, castor oil provides fuller and stronger hair. Brittle or dry hair looks healthy and regains its shine. The oil can be used pure or in combination with other carrier oils, such as coconut or argan. Spread a few drops of fatty plant oil on your fingertips and apply to the lengths and ends of your hair (while still damp).
Eyelash and Eyebrow Care
Also use castor oil as an eyelash serum for longer and fuller lashes or eyebrows! Place one drop of oil on a cotton swab and apply it to your lash line (just like eyeliner). Or apply it between your eyebrow hairs with an eyebrow brush. For best results, use this serum daily, preferably before bed.
Beard Care
Also use castor oil for beard care to stimulate hair growth and nourish your beard. Apply the oil to your fingertips and massage in gently.
Hair Mask
Normal to dry or damaged hair can be given extra nourishment with an (overnight) hair mask. Both castor and coconut oil contribute to healthy and strong hair with a natural shine.
Recipe for 1 (overnight) hair mask:
5 ml coconut oil
5 ml castor oil
For a dry scalp: 2 drops sandalwood, or for an oily scalp: 2 drops lemongrass
Mix all ingredients into 1 mask. Apply the mask evenly throughout your hair, from roots to ends. Wrap your hair in a towel or use a shower cap and leave the mask on for at least 1 to 2 hours—but preferably overnight! Then, wash the mask out twice (the next morning) with a neutral or mild shampoo.
Tip: For long hair, use double the amount of castor and coconut oil.
Scalp Massage
For a dry scalp and to stimulate hair growth, you can give a scalp massage with your fingertips. Apply the oil to your fingertips and massage from front to back, from the forehead, along the midline, towards the temples, and down to the neck. For dry or damaged hair, you can optionally pull the oil through the lengths of your hair with your fingers, from roots to ends.
Recipe for 1 scalp massage:
5-10 ml castor oil
2 ml argan oil
1 drop Roman chamomile + 1 drop frankincense – for relaxation. Or: 1 drop lemongrass + 1 drop peppermint – for an oily scalp
